Ipswich celebrates 150 years.
In 2010 Ipswich celebrates the 150th anniversary of being
proclaimed a municipality. This was a major milestone as the colony
of Queensland had been proclaimed only months before. Ipswich was
one of the first settlements in the new colony to take advantage of
the Municipalities Act passed of 1858 and become formally
recognised. This achievement is a tribute to the drive and ambition
of the 3000 Ipswich residents at the time. The two key dates for
commemorating this important anniversary are: 3 March in 2010 as
the day in 1860 that the change in status was formally announced;
and 12 April marking the anniversary of the first Council meeting.
